Gardens in Every Capital City Project:
Bloom's Taxonomy and the Learning the Capitals:

According to Benjamin Bloom, questions can be categories into different levels of abstraction.

Knowledge is defined as the remembering of previously learned material. Knowledge represents the simplest level of learning outcomes in the cognitive domain.

National Social Studies standards require students to master the names of each state and capital in the US and Canada. Teachers of excellence use a variety of instructional strategies and resources to respond to students' diverse needs. This year, combine this Social Studies standard with the Journey North Gardens in Every Capital Project to better your understanding of the greening of spring across North America.

Dig Deeper
Cultivate curiosity about the interplay of sunlight and geography. Which capital will emerge first? Why? What factors influence spring’s arrival? Engage students in a process of inquiry to predict the order that spring will arrive in the state and provincial capitals:

  • Think out loud.
  • Brainstorm and record questions as you predict.
  • Post questions then add more to the list as you dig deeper into your regional studies.
  • Collect and review data as it comes in.
  • Refine your predictions?
  • Why does spring approach capitals in this order? Defend your reasoning.
