Why is this information important?

Scientists need to know when and where monarchs are found during migration. In order to protect monarchs and their habitat, scientists need to understand which regions are the most important to monarchs in the springtime.

  • Which are the most important migration routes?
  • What regions are the most important for breeding?
  • What human activities could affect monarchs in these critical areas?
  • What are the variables that determine how quickly or slowly the migration progresses?
  • How do climate and weather affect the monarchs' travels and their ability to reproduce?

Citizen scientists like you can contribute important observations. As a migratory species, monarchs are always on the move so it's impossible for scientists to observe them across their range. Please report the first monarch butterfly and milkweed you see in the spring.
