Migrating By Day
Because they have poor night vision, hummingbirds prefer to migrate by day. The exception is any Ruby-throated Hummingbird traveling over the Gulf of Mexico. If a bird chooses this route, it is over water when night falls and must keep flying until reaching land. Crossing the Gulf takes about 18 - 24 hours, depending on weather conditions.
