Meet Tom Stehn!  Tom Stehn is the Whooping Crane Coordinator at Aransas NWR. He works for the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS). Tom is also co-leader of the International Crane Recovery Team. The team is part of a partnership of groups helping to bring Whooping cranes back from the brink of extinction. Tom is a wildlife biologist. He has been helping Whooping cranes since 1982!   A view over Texas crane country from the plane. See any Whooping cranes?   This map shows the 115,000-acre refuge where the world's last remaining natural migratory flock of Whooping cranes spends winter. Because you can't see Whooping crane habitat from the refuge roads, a pilot flies Tom over the refuge to count cranes there during migration and winter.
